    REVIEWS:

"The first track from the EP, You Don’t Need To Ask, is an atmospheric but unsettling dark ode to love that sounds like the internal monologue running through a stalkers’ head as he rummages through your bins – but in a good way. Thunderous percussion, flailing guitar and restrained piano back up Dom Noble’s insistent, louche vocal line that will have you looking behind you all the way home." - NARC. Magazine (November 2016)

"Kobadelta have become firm favourites at Louder Than War and there is good reason. Their exciting blend of dark tones and addictive strap lines is one which hasn’t gone unnoticed both here and slowly but surely around the music business where they are continuing their journey with a distinct buzz. Brothers-in-arms to the mighty Bernaccia who recently released their fine album Growl Peace Belief, they too have hints of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Doors but then start to vary slightly as the likes of Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin also appear. As a recent support act to The Fall, Temples and Lola Colt they are growing both in reputation and stature. With three recent EPs under their belt in the form of The Hidden Door, Remain Distracted and Open Visions their Geordie swagger is becoming entirely justified as the mature with every release. Hold Yr’self opens with mysterious pipes before the characteristic guitar sound of Alex Malliris gnarls into being swiftly followed by the thumping bassline of Jon Marley, and brother Chris’s drums which perfectly accompany the brooding vocals of Dom Noble (brother of Bernaccia vocalist Jonny). Hold Yr’self has the essence of 60s psychedelic rock and rhythms, and swirls around in a haze of controlled power and aggression. Its echoes of Jim Morrison and The Doors are undeniable but it too shows a sound that young men nowadays maybe shouldn’t be so familiar and adept at producing – thankfully they are. The tone and pace continues with Ride By The Light, another gripping and compelling bass-fuzzed mini anthem with a chorus capable of engaging the larger audience. The mighty Bathsheba leans more towards heavy rock with a swirling cavalcade of sweaty testosterone powered spirit. Is This The Start Of Something Beautiful? is lyrically slightly clumsy at times trying to overload lines to the extreme and sounding a little uncomfortable, but the story told within diverts attention away and the musicianship is once more spot-on. You Don’t Need To Ask slows the pace somewhat – again the deep bass fuzz is prominent and there’s a subtle darkness to the track which suits the band perfectly. Another fine EP from Kobadelta and the promise of a fine debut long player whenever that may be. Stirling stuff." - Louder Than War (October 2016)

"I’m about 10 days late with this, strictly speaking, but sumptuous Geordie combo Kobadelta have a new EP out this October and it’s five tracks are really well worth your time and your ears. Recent single, ‘Hold Yr’self’, is as dark, sticky and lava lamp-esque as ever it was with that hypnotic melodic refrain weaving in and out of the swirl of Doors inspired guitars. On ‘Ride by the Light’ the darkness continues but the guitars take more of a leading role as the tune, pitched somewhere between the Zutons and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, glides relentlessly after its victim down a foggy, black and white Victorian street an hour after the last orders bell was tolled. There is a cinematic quality to the music of Kobadelta that will appeal to fans of the likes of Nick Cave and Arcade Fire but the delicious, treacly blackness is more akin to the tar pit that Queens of the Stone Age crawled from, fully formed, which is a wondrous thing. ‘Bathsheba’ has a slightly more garage feel about it with the drums urgently pushing things forwards as the bass rolls relentlessly like the paint in the middle of the road illuminated only by the single headlight of an old, beaten up motorcycle. I haven’t mentioned the vocals on this EP yet but the dark, lip curled swagger should, by rights, grace stages the world over from the dark, seedy bars of the remnants of the UK live music scene to the sacrificial hipster celebration of Coachella. These rich tones are particularly evident on the sprawling and expansive ‘Is This The Start Of Something Beautiful?’ which would easily grace any album by a Josh Homme project. The EP closes up with ‘You Don’t Need To Ask…’ and the dirty, grungy guitar sound is back with flavours of My Bloody Valentine and Richard Hawley all mingling in a huge cauldron of distortion and sexually charged vocal delivery. Kobadelta truly are a class act with tunes, ideas and (allegedly) a pretty comprehensive contract with the devil to let them live forever as long as they keep rocking." - Listen With Monger (October 2016)

"You can always rely on Newcastle band Kobadelta to ring the bell marked "Good Stuff" and their new EP is suitably sure-footed and features the rumbustious psych of 'Hold Yr'self', which is heavy and suitably wired. Elsewhere I like 'Ride By The Light', which sounds like early House Of Love, which is always a big plus for me." - The Crack Magazine (October 2016)

"If you haven't heard the bewitching and gorgeously moody tunes from Newcastle based band Kobadelta, then you're seriously missing out. Their enigmatic sound radiates a dark poetic street grandeur and their live shows are awe-inspiring. Their latest EP, 'The Metaphysical' is a gutsy expression of political, spiritual and cultural ideas, coupled with enigmatic riffs and enthralling harmonies. Kobadelta have an unapologetically honest and genuine vibe to them. Their songs are bold and beautifully worded and possess a truly unique sound." - NE Volume (October 2016)

"Continuing to embrace a passion for Byzantine esotericism and bewitching leaden heavy rock the Newcastle 5-piece Kobadelta have both improved markedly and expanded beyond their remit on each of their EPs. They confidently prowl the daemonic landscape, balancing a clash of drums and ominous distortion with more nuanced, less dramatic, but calmer breaks in the tumultuous barrage and drone: There’s even room for reflection and introspection in the often solid block of atmospheric doom. Beginning as they mean to go on, the opening heavy gothic ‘Hold Yr’self’ channels Kasabian and the Archie Bronson Outfit on its journey from a pan pipe scene-setting Amazon to the dark arts. Under the silvery moon a dreaded serenade twists in torment to the melodic drone of a distant echoed The Mission on ‘Ride By The Light’, and a motoring incantation reverberates across the holy land of myth on ‘Bathsheba’. But even in the suffocating midst of a dystopian world, such as the doomed rock sustained augur ‘Is This The Start Of Something Beautiful?’, Dom Noble’s vocals remain stoned and languorous. And on the parting shot, ‘You Don’t Need To Ask’ there’s a sense of romanticized balladry at play; attempting to escape the eastern bell spectre of a Medieval esoteric Russia meets Portishead grief. Lyrically, modern themes and social-political protestations merge with the ‘metaphysical’ – hence the title. The contemporary on this EP is often given a flowery embellishment courtesy of the Biblical; a deeper motive or meaning cryptically interlocked and given a certain gravitas. Producing a more savoury, intricate and melodious form of heavy rock without reverting to stereotype and showboating, Kobadelta once again walk a fine line between stoner doom and progressive rock, experimenting all the way without losing their signature swagger." - Monolith Cocktail (September 2016)

"It is fair to say that their quartet of previous EPs have established Kobadelta as one of the most intriguing and captivating prospects to emerge on the British music scene in recent years and also that listening to the evolution of their seriously tantalising sound has captivated almost as much as the noise itself. October sees the release of the Newcastle bred outfit’s new encounter and another growth in songwriting, music, and temptation. Their five-track EP, The Metaphysical, sees the band’s psych rock spiced sound reveal its richest and most adventurous landscape yet with an even greater weave of textures and flavours. Melodies are imposing, harmonies bewitching yet both offering magnetic warmth which shimmers and radiates against the instinctive dark tones and emotive shadows which breed the band’s songs. It is a tapestry which lays the Kobadelta sound somewhere between Echo and The Bunnymen and The Doors with an almost gothic Nick Cave essence for extra flavouring. Formed in 2010, the quintet soon built a potent live reputation locally, nudging on wider recognition with the release of debut EP Ritual (Time Flies) three years later. 2014 saw the band make bigger strides towards national awareness and in sound through both the Hidden Door and Remain Distracted EPs, their success subsequently eclipsed by the Open Visions EP last year. It was a dark and compelling encounter pushing the band’s sound to another level which now The Metaphysical cements and takes on again while still showing the potential of even more adventures to be discovered and explored within the band. With shows alongside the likes of Temples, Allusondrugs, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Demob Happy, Splashh, The Temperance Movement, The Weeks, Lola Colt, and The Voyeurs among many more, and those aforementioned releases, sparking a real appetite for the band’s sound, The Metaphysical might just be the moment Kobadelta hits the broadest spotlights. The EP swiftly captures ears and imagination with opener Hold Yr’self, the track seducing initially with the caress of suggested pipes before the song tumbles into view with tangy grooves and swinging rhythms. There is no escaping The Doors scenting to any of the band’s song, though Ian McCulloch and co are probably a stronger spicing to what soon shows itself to be distinctly Kobadelta. With the synths of Jordan Robson dancing around the magnetic melodic weave cast by guitarist Alex Malliris, the imagination is soon hooked, gripped tighter as the potent vocals of Dom Noble bring a darker edge in collusion with the rapier swings of drummer Chris Malliris and Jon Marley's brooding basslines. It is a compelling start matched by the infectious stroll of the similarly shadow rich and sonically fiery Ride By The Light. Mixing mellower seducing with those dynamic flames of sound and energy, the song is a whirlpool of adventure and drama. As keys wrap the predacious tone of the bass in just one of the track’s major attractions, Kobadelta unveil something unique to themselves. Bathsheba raises the energy and sultriness of the band’s sound next; its raw mystique and fuzzy climate a feisty wrapping to the tenacious rhythms driving yet another irresistible proposal from the EP. As lyrics and vocals tell a story so does the music, both colluding in a spirit rousing incitement which seems to become darker and more volatile with every enjoyable listen; a potency emulated in the following Is This The Start Of Something Beautiful? and its ferine adventure. So easy to get physically and mentally sucked into its suggestive kaleidoscope of sound, the song trespasses and transfixes the senses as each band member unleashes their fiery enterprise. Bringing the EP to a magnificent close is You Don’t Need To Ask…, a slow prowl of a headily dark song which borders on demonic even with its theatre of catchy charm, spellbinding melodies, and predacious rhythms. There is a definite occult rock air to the track and its dark romance with the minimal but powerful presence of piano icing on another mighty and increasingly tempestuous highlight of the release. There are a few bands which have emerged in recent years for which it is hard not to find a touch of real excitement to go along with anticipation upon word of a new proposition from them. The Metaphysical is the perfect example as to why Kobadelta is firmly one of them." - The Ringmaster Review (September 2016)

"Grungey psych-rock from IBWM's spiritual home in the North-East, this one's about the biblical Bathsheba rather than Thomas hardy's heroine. It's a veritable wall of noise you're presented with here. Everything's turned up to 11 and the vocal pierces through with a lo-fi fuzz. It's dark, moody and excellent." - In Bed With Maradona (September 2016)

"Newcastle band Kobadelta have returned with their heavily energised yet stirring track ‘Bathsheba’. Enthused with savage vocals and grimy bass, it resembles the dirtier work from the likes of Foals and Drenge. With catchy refrains (“We all keep moving backwards and forwards”), the juicy lyrics of the chorus enhance both the sound and substance of the number collectively. Profanities, grungy riffs and the pounding drums truly show the shining potential of the North Eastern band." - GigSlutz (August 2016)

"Most people have an innermost desire to just absolutely lose control and abandon inhibitions once in a while. It’s why everybody goes out on a weekend and why a rising number of us have problems/understandings with alcohol. Likewise, it’s why Bathsheba, the latest heavyweight single from Kobadelta, works so well – it’s a relentless aural assault that allows four minutes of whatever the fuck you feel like. Every instrument is amplified to an apocalyptic rumble, from the brutally primal-force of the drums to the bassline that is so deep and all-encompassing that it is core to – and almost indistinguishable from – the destructive atmosphere of the track. Then there’s the vocal, which pierces through with a mix of passionate momentum and paced monotony. The end result is an experience that channels the intensity of Kurt Cobain into a mid-tempo storm of hellfire that only Kobadelta could produce." - Fresh Beats 365 (August 2016)

"From the forthcoming five track release, the third – Bathsheba reminds of that hour of coming down from an adrenaline trip when the lows catch up with the highs and the listener finds themselves wrestling with their own demons. Lasting only a tad under three minutes and fifty seconds, this is a song that the mind wants to wrangle with for far longer. Strident bass thumps off the walls as the synths echo, whilst guitar spirals a kaleidoscope of colours and the vocal lays like a ill-tempered venomous snake laying in wait to strike passing prey. This is a track to tip the paranoid into a breakdown of self-inflicted brain melt as the lyrics inveigle their way into the brain. Why it has taken me almost two years to come back to Kobadelta is a mystery, but I hope it is long before August 2018 I return again." - Emerging Indie Bands (August 2016)

"Kobadelta's Hold Yr'self begins with woodwind and cymbals and then explodes into a twisted fusion of dark vibes ad psychedelic introspection. The atmosphere of this song is grand and the dexterity of the quintet's sound is something else; it is feral and mighty in equl amounts." - NARC, Magazine (June 2016)

"The single itself is a primitive testimony to Kobadelta’s sound, luring you in with tribalistic pan pipes before the fury of Chris Malliris’ thumping drums come crashing down upon listeners. Tinged with wavering psychedelic riffs and heavy distortion throughout, ‘Hold Yr’self’ is as atmospherically alluring as it raw and raucous. Dom Nobles’ dark lyricism, “it wasn’t suicide, I was pushed” encapsulates the foreboding atmosphere perfectly with smooth, deep vocals that beckon listeners down the rabbit hole." - Gigs North East 'TRACK OF THE WEEK' (June 2016)

"Geordie gents Kobadelta are back with new single, ‘Hold Yr’self’, which is accompanied by a hectic point of view video that leaves you with a spot of motion sickness. The Doors meets Primal Scream with Nick Cave on production duties gives you a flavour of this tune, but the wall of guitars blurred together with a growling bass, a few blasts of flute and a swirl of ambience tell the full story. These guys have consistently been pumping out tunes that impress, arouse and generally grab you by whichever genitals you are in possession of, but it feels like they need that leg up now the next level. Big radio airplay, a management deal or some attention stateside should do it, but if there’s any justice in the world Kobadelta will be more of a household name by the time Santa starts steaming his special suit." - Listen With Monger (June 2016)

"As the lead single from a new EP due later in the summer Kobadelta’s Hold Yr’self, like the bastard offspring of Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath, may be something of a leap forward stylistically but retains the dark marauding blues that is at the heart of the band’s sound. While the signature flute hook might be the best thing since Aqualung, the black gold guitar riff that accompanies it is pure Kobadelta, as it builds into a hypnotic groove reminiscent of early Verve but with the volume turned up to 11." - NARC. Magazine (May 2016)

"Their lead singer also somehow found himself on stage with Nick Cave when he last played Sage Gateshead. But if anyone can trade vocals with Cave, then surely it’s Kobadelta’s frontman, whose commanding presence is all over their new single, Hold Yr’self. The band swirl up a darkly imposing and scuzzily psychedelic backdrop for Dom’s authoritative pronouncements to be handed down to listeners as though written on stone tablets." - The Crack Magazine (May 2016)

"Get on your dancing shoes because Kobadelta are back. The masters of desert-rock have returned after a year-long silence to release their latest track and free download Ride By The Light. Channelling an early Arctic Monkeys sound but with a lot more muscle behind it, Ride By The Light is a solid return to form for a band who disappeared without a trace. The quiet-loud dynamic makes the track sound massive by process of chorus inflation, but even at its most subdued there’s an underlying sense of urgency. Vocalist Dom Noble turns a fierce phrase with laser precision, adding a suave edge to the track as he delivers the vocals with a sinister calmness. They’re back, baby." - Fresh Beats 365 (April 2016)

lyrics

I crept in with the stethoscope I broke the safe,
I put the emerald inside the case,
Stole the secret file on time and space, left the room without a trace,
They blame the doctors, the doctors blame their wives,
For their great expectations of the finer things in life,
But between you and I, these are things that money cannot buy,

Now we ride by the light of a silvery moon,
We live and we die, under the same sky as you

When did second-hand become a vintage suit?
The secret ingredient to the home-made soup,
Every little thing that you said it came true, but I never believed you,
The factory keeps your children at work,
But it causes heartache to sweet Mother Earth,
It's a matter of fact, an unwritten rule,
A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do,

Now we ride by the light of a silvery moon,
We live and we die, under the same sky,
Now we ride by the light of a silvery moon,
We live and we die, under the same sky as you

about

Kobadelta Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

A five piece rock band from Newcastle dabbling in dark and heavy psych-tinged rock...

"Kobadelta are frantic and feral. This Newcastle-based five-piece have supported the likes of Splashh and Temples, but they're not quite as psychedelic as those bands, instead pushing a far more muscular, gnashing sound. Their second EP, 'Remain Distracted', is out now." - NME
