    REVIEWS:

"Let Kobadelta make love to you. And when I say “make love” I mean “carry you on an orgasmic journey through the outer reaches of bluesy space rock”. Mmm… It’s a real throbber of a release; indie-rock that pulsates with a dark heart; bluesy and nicely singed at the edges by way of some psychedelic flourishes. Cracking stuff." - The Crack Magazine (February 2014)

"Superb new five-tracker from this Newcastle outfit who make songs like distant thunder which have all the charged atmosphere of an imminent storm. Bluesy, rocky, occasionally frazzled, occasionally dark of ballad, but always potent" - The Crack Magazine (March 2014)

"The Hidden Door EP delivers a brooding, atmospheric psychedelic rock energy. The five piece are striving to cover new ground, whilst both retaining and increasing their fan base - which is a feat many artists struggle to achieve." - NARC. Magazine (February 2014)

"A new year has signalled exciting things for Kobadelta. The Tyneside band are kick-starting what they hope to be a busy year with the release of their first full EP, titled 'The Hidden Door' EP. Included on the EP is the track 'Supernatural Cause', which is a dark and gritty three-minute offering that is screaming to be heard live. Follow this with second track 'Electric Chair' and you get a real feel of the range of Kobadelta, but one constant is the heavy guitars and racing drums" - The Evening Chronicle (31st January 2014)

"North East indie rockers Kobadelta are back with a new, 5 track EP and it starts with a real statement of intent. 'Supernatural Cause' has a menacing beat and sinister guitar twang that is like the Doors playing a set on death row during a power cut. When the fuzzy, distortion laden guitars kick in with a vengeance you get the feeling that the locks on all the cells have just failed as well. Fittingly, the next track is called 'Electric Chair' and has a Kasabian-esque energy to it whilst channelling endless 80s British goth bands. The gentle acoustic intro to 'Not Above & Not Behind' is a welcome respite from the murderous tones of the first two tracks but the baritone vocal of front man Dom Noble and the lyrical content about a deceased loved one keep everything thoroughly steeped in death and mortality. And the theme continues with the death march rumble of Chris Malliris' drums at the start of 'The Hidden Door' coupled with the subtle Dick Dale guitars and growing swirl of feedback and distortion. Finishing up with 'Love Stoned Chic', Kobadelta have once again proved their worth as expert purveyors of dark, retro-inspired rock that would make Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club jealous. Darkly delicious stuff surely something to be experienced live - hopefully on the same bill as Dublin's September Girls as they would surely create something of a magnificent noise together." - Listen With Monger (February 2014)

"Kobadelta are a band we have covered very favourably before. Their brooding, blues-laden brand of psychedelica really pricked our ears twice in 2013, with two single and b-sides impressing and receiving very positive reviews from Reviewcaster. After wrapping our ears around debut EP The Hidden Door this week, I think it’s safe to say our excitement has not dwindled, and that this Newcastle five-piece are one of the most promising bands to be making noises around the north east right now. The Hidden Door is as brooding as both of the singles we’ve covered previously, with opening track Supernatural Cause sounding menacing from the outset. A threatening bassline governs the whole arrangement throughout, with urgency not taking a place at the forefront of the Kobadelta ethos until a frenzied outro. Cymbals crash and guitars bruise before a sense of foreboding is resumed once more. The EP undoubtedly shows a much broader range of strings to the Kobadelta bow than the previously released singles. The blueprint remains the same, but the resourceful applications of instruments and pace result in a more dynamic arrangement rich in fretful textures. Electric Chair bears hallmarks not too dissimilar to the desert rock cult of the nineties, equipped with subtle, sunbaked guitar tones, crushing bass driven riffs and unanticipated changes in pace. An acoustic guitar is the perfect foil for a frank, assured vocal in Not Above & Not Behind, before synths impose rather than shimmer in the title track. Closing track Love Stoned Chic is the most blatant exhibition of bravado, with a huge, distorted bassline strutting amidst a littering of guitar notes. Kobadelta are an intriguing prospect as much as an exciting one. Their brooding brand of psychedelica is refined by a perceptive use of the tools in their remit, and the Michael Stipe-esque vocals are the perfect garnish to the murkily textured sound. The Kobadelta melting pot plays host to a huge swath of influences, ranging from the Black Rebel Motorcycle Clubs to The Doors, with glimmers of optimism bipolarized by malignant onslaughts that impress upon a listener a menacing sense of foreboding. The band have already shared the stage with some of the most exciting finds of the past year or so (Temples and Splashh to name but a few), and continue to make all the right noises. The Hidden Door is a fine debut EP, hypnotising and pounding simultaneously. A very compelling arrangement." - Reviewcaster (February 2014)

"Newcastle psychedelic indie rock band Kobadelta have been on the scene since 2010 creating a stir with their unique take on dark, brooding indie rock. Their new E.P, ‘The Hidden Door’ is due out later this month and features five brand new tracks. It is easy to pick out the influence of bands like Nirvana, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Echo & The Bunneymen and even Danzig in the music, but they manage to add their own twist along the way. ‘Supernatural Cause’ kicks the EP off with a dreary, grunge-inspired beat that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Alice In Chains record before the distorted guitars come crashing in for the chorus. ‘Not Above & Not Behind’ and ‘The Hidden Door’ slow down the pace yet still pack a seriously impressive punch. Imagine the music of Black Aria Danzig mixed with the vocals of The Good Son era Nick Cave – without sounding too much like either of those things – and you might get somewhere close to imagining what Kobadelta sound like. It is a real talent to be able to craft songs that incorporate elements of your obvious influences, yet still sound new and interesting and that talent is exuded by Kobadelta in spades. The most impressive song on the EP by far is ‘Electric Chair’, a three and half minute melody-rich tale of deception and delusion told with lyrics like “you’re no longer a wolf if you wear a sheep's clothes” and “in my wildest dreams I lie in between Aphrodite and Athena”. Excellent. I’m not surprised by the buzz this well-established North East band have created, and ‘The Hidden Door’ EP should only add to the plaudits. It is a remarkable piece of work full of atmospheric music, haunting vocals and a unique storytelling approach with their lyrics." - Tune Army (February 2014)

"We've had our eye on Newcastle's Kobadelta since we first heard them last summer, and it was great that their last single delivered the goods in the way we'd hoped. This week they release 'The Hidden Door' EP, and it's the sound of modern psych getting down and dirty with Nick Cave, and naturally that's a very good thing. Check out freebie 'Love Stoned Chic' and then go and buy the rest." - The Sound Of Confusion (February 2014)

"So what’s this Newcastle thing that’s going on eh? Last week Bernaccia graced my ears with their wonderful Cinema, now I find the new Kobadelta EP daring to permanently fix itself to my CD. It’s five tracks, each one able to stand tall on its own merits, are delightful slabs of neo psychedelia, blues influenced indie pop-rock. Clear hints of The Doors and the Bunnymen form the base with a Kobadelta twist thrown in for good measure to complete a brooding, often haunting sound. Opener, Supernatural Cause plods into being with a confident and comfortable swagger, possibly hints of Nirvana grunge in between guitars which almost distort but are finely controlled on the mixing desk taking the sound as far as it can possibly go. It’s not just cracking melodies either, lyrically Kobadelta are special too, telling stories along the way. There may even be hints of Arctic Monkeys here too, but essentially Kobadelta take their influences and weave them into a sound which is very much their own. Electric Chair throbs along with a cracking bass line and some awesome lyrics – ‘the bosom entices, go suck on your thumb, I’m trapped in the Abbey with the bisexual nuns’. Love Stoned Chic is as Jim Morrison as it gets. Wonderful stuff. Lazily buzzing along with a degree of maturity that you rarely get from a young band. They clearly exude a confidence and swagger beyond their years. Not Above And Not Behind takes a more subdued tone with dark lyrics describing a dead love ‘I took a branch out of the family tree….. you’ll always walk beside me’. The title track again is slow paced with brooding lyrics, up there with the best of modern poetry and still packing a punch. In short, this is a superb collection with five tracks each worthy of being credited as the lead. Haunting, mesmerising and powerful. You haven't heard the last of Kobadelta." - Louder Than War (March 2014)

"Call them Blues, call them Psychedelic Indie, call them whatever you want, but Newcastle band Kobadelta are altogether something else. Ominous vocals paired with a trance of wavering guitars make for a haunting energy that is difficult to ignore. This compelling quintet has already supported up and coming band Temples, and most recently played alongside Birmingham band Dumb at Newcastle’s Think Tank as part of their UK tour. On top of this Kobadelta released debut EP The Hidden Door this Valentine’s Day and it is available to download quite literally as cheap as chips via Bandcamp. If digital tracks aren’t your thing, the band are also offering a limited edition Digipack CD of the EP plus a physical copy of last single ‘Ritual’ – in case five songs just aren’t quite enough for you. Sounding at times like a laid back and darker Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Kobadelta come across as a well distinguished group – with rich melodies and something not quite like many other current bands. Rather then going in one ear and out the other, their new EP is impressive in its ability to surge through the body and leave you in a bubble of the band’s soothing verve. Furthermore, it is incredibly clear that each element of their music is so carefully put together in order to create such a consistently coherent sound. Even when drums are dominant they do not take over the sound of the guitar and vice versa, they all work together in a perfect harmony topped off with the deep and menacing vocals of lead singer Dom Noble. Moreover, the synths are perfectly subtle in order to delicately complement the other instruments rather than engulf it all. Kobadelta are great for a vast amount of people from those who are looking for chill out music, to music-heads looking for something to rip apart and analyse right to the bone." - Noise Cannon (March 2014)

"Expelling a captivating kaleidoscope of emotive shadows and sonic light, The Hidden Door EP is a transfixing and quite compelling proposition from a band beginning to draw intensive praise and acclaim its way. The creators of the magnetic release are UK rock band Kobadelta; a quintet from Newcastle who are stirring up an energetic and demanding appetite for their imaginative sounds. Consisting of five enthralling and expressive mergers of psychedelic and melodic rock with blues and spatial rock ‘n’ roll additives, the band’s new release is a masterful temptation which whether fully seducing or simply awakening eager attention leaves senses and imagination greedy. With the Ritual (Time Flies) single of last year under their belt as well as the sharing of stages with bands such as Temples, Splashh, and Superfood, Kobadelta takes little time to excite ears whether new or old with the opening seconds of first track Supernatural Cause. Drums and bass cast the initial temptation to excite senses, with the guitar soon adding its melodic lures to the coaxing. It is an instant web of persuasion which seemingly draws on The Doors and Echo & The Bunnymen, an embracing enticement which smooches and dances with the imagination whilst the vocals of Dom Noble croon with expressive strength. Throughout its heated narrative and melodic climate, the song sways before and leans bewitchingly upon the emotions, the tangy sonic design by guitarist Alex Malliris and mesmeric charm of the keys from Jordan Robson a potent spice for thoughts and passions. The track is an exceptional entrance, one which simply gets stronger and richer over time marking the band out alone as something potentially special. The following Electric Chair as the first launches its bait with the crisp rhythms of drummer Chris Malliris and the especially alluring throaty bass prowl of Jonathan Marley leading the coaxing. There is a swagger to the song from the first note, one egged on by a delicious guitar twang and fiery sax caresses, but most of all by the sheer inventive mischief of the song. Also as its predecessor, intriguing shadows and a heavy air to certainly the rhythmic intensity borrows the imagination in its own purposeful casting, whilst the guitar and keys colour that emerging canvas with inspiring and immersive psychedelically bred hues. It is a masterful enticement continuing the impressive progress of the release. Not Above & Not Behind moves in next with its acoustic and vocal union, Noble confirming his skilled and potent delivery is as varied and consistently compelling as the sounds. Admittedly taking a little longer to fully persuade than maybe other tracks, the song emerges as a thoroughly absorbing incitement before making way for the title track, a musically expansive encounter spawned from the same emotive reserve and descriptive strength as its predecessor. Big rangy beats steer the fire of passion and sonic design though arguably the drama and truly incendiary spark of earlier songs is lost somewhere in its flames. Nevertheless it is another heavily brooding and accomplished suasion for ears and satisfaction. The closing Love Stoned Chic is a deliciously intensive smog of fuzzy sonics and raw atmospheres, thickened further by an impacting rhythmic penetration and guitar causticity. Veined by a searing melodic toxin and gently invasive keys, the track ventures into the realm of The Doors once again though it is impossible to take too much of the originality of the song away from Kobadelta. A release which increases its potency and persuasion the more you let its fingers tease and search the senses, The Hidden Door EP is a rousing and enthralling adventure proving Kobadelta to be on the frontline of the most exciting and fascinating emerging rock bands around in the UK. Expect big things for and from them ahead, something to eagerly anticipate." - The RingMaster Review (March 2014)

lyrics

I hope that I didn't wake you up,
I spilled the water, never broke your cup,
You didn't move, you're just like most,
Folk who stay out late to drink and smoke,
Wide awake, no place to sleep,
Stay on top, I'm happy underneath,
Go and touch it, you can reach

I hate that you're right, but I love that I'm wrong,
I hate that you're right, but I love that I'm wrong,
People be happy to get down and dance,
Do the old Love Stoned Chic

Waiting for something, the sound of the trumpets,
To call out behind mountains,
I hope but I doubt that the people will hear them,
And they'll have no reason to invade, withdraw,
We're staging no coup

I hate that you're right, but I love that I'm wrong,
I hate that you're right, but I love that I'm wrong,
People be happy to get down and dance,
Do the old Love Stoned Chic

In times like these, we fall on our feet,
Take what you can from the jaws of defeat,
People be happy to get down and dance,
Do the old Love Stoned Chic

Keep doing the old Love Stoned Chic

about

Kobadelta Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

A five piece rock band from Newcastle dabbling in dark and heavy psych-tinged rock...

"Kobadelta are frantic and feral. This Newcastle-based five-piece have supported the likes of Splashh and Temples, but they're not quite as psychedelic as those bands, instead pushing a far more muscular, gnashing sound. Their second EP, 'Remain Distracted', is out now." - NME
